Thoughts on Action Research Plan for ePortfolios in a Middle School Classroom

Writer's picture: Jennifer StanleyJennifer Stanley

I believe the work that I have already completed for my innovation plan has opened my eyes to a bigger picture of how ePortfolios could become a catalyst for student success. ePortfolios would allow students to see themselves through their work. It has the possibility to build their emotional learning as it makes them more victorious academically. My innovation plan has a direct link to what I believe will be a great topic for my continued research on ePortfolios.

Students can use an ePortfolio as a digital forum to reflect on the work they do and create. Students frequently struggle to relate what they are studying now to how it will help them achieve success. An ePortfolio may also be able to close the gap in learning engagement. The action research will be used to determine if ePortfolios connect learning to being more successful in middle school (and beyond).

My question is;

How can ePortfolios in middle school classes connect student’s learning to their perceived success?

Possible problems that could arise with my question are that others may see this as too broad of a question, or not understand what perceived success might be. I believe that when I am surveying students and teachers that I will have to be specific with my survey questions in order to get quality data.

This will definitely be qualitative research because there are multiple groups I am (possibly) wanting to reach. My audience is familiar, or somewhat familiar with qualitative research studies and my research question is very broad and holistic (can be left to interpretation). Although my topic seems broad, it really comes down to the process which could be a long one due to different aspects with a lower desire for structure. My literary background will allow me to be more qualitative as well.

The final piece that will assist me in creating a good action research plan is to look at the data on a continuous basis.

How do you Record?

As far as presentations that use audio and visual, I only create using Google slides. I have paid for the Slidesgo pro account last year...
